- New Geniuses: sunray_2003,
who became EE's first 4 million point member a couple of weeks ago,
went over the 1,000,000 level in Outlook last week.

- Light at the end of the tunnel: The battle over who will wind up
running the show at
PeopleSoft appears to be headed for a proxy fight in March. Oracle made
a tender offer of $24 a share for PeopleSoft, and received assurances that
it could acquire 61 per cent of the shares; however, a "poison pill" created
by PeopleSoft's current board of directors has kept Oracle from exercising
its option to buy up the shares.
So Oracle has proposed replacing four of the seven members of the
PeopleSoft board of directors with a slate of candidates of its own, and
is now soliciting proxies from PeopleSoft's shareholders -- a tactic it
tried earlier this year, but abandoned when the US government filed an
antitrust suit. Oracle wound up winning the suit, so it's trying again.
The last annual shareholders' meeting was in March 2004, but the 2005
meeting has not been scheduled yet.

Speed, speed and more speed: We reported a couple of weeks ago
about the IBM Blue Gene/L computer, which is the current record-holder
for computing speed at 70 trillion calculations per second. But who's
number 2? Our
friends at Silicon Graphics, which built a Linux system using 20
off-the-shelf boxes with Intel processors for NASA. A college roommate
was one of their original engineers... I wonder if he can get an
employee discount for me? Wired Magazine recently ran a story on what
the
company that brought us Jurassic Park is now doing.
- Signs of the Apochalypse: There have been a bunch over the last
couple of weeks. Of particular note...
Microsoft has decided to
give
away Windows XP, but only to people who have a pirated copy. The
offer was made by Microsoft's UK division last week two days after
a
software upgrade by Microsoft and EDS caused 80,000 computers to crash.
A British professor has said that the day will come when
electronic viruses will
infect people just as they infect computers now. He also said that humans
will be a "sub-species" of cyborgs. Thanks, but no thanks.

"When I connect to database using SQL plus, it connects properly.
However, when I add a DSN, and click 'test connection' it throws error
saying 'SQL state=IM004 ERROR Driver's SQLallochandle on SQL_HANDLE_ENV
failed.'"

I'm planning on taking a few excursions over
the next month or so, but keeping in touch with Experts Exchange won't be
a problem with a laptop with both a wireless card and a modem. Or at least,
it shouldn't be if I can find a few hot spots along the way. c|net has
a
quickie course in finding them that will be available Dec. 2.
One place I won't be is Washington, DC. An article in Federal Computer
Week found hot
spots all over, including one at the Pentagon. The magazine's investigators
also found open hot spots at some contractors who work for the National
Security Council and the Internal Revenue Service.
Sophos has reported that the Sober-I worm,
discovered last week, is accounting for over half the new virus reports to the
site. Like most, it's sent from an infected computer using the address book of
an infected computer. Another worm -- W32/Yanz-A -- uses the lure of an MP3 from an Asian
pop star.
Latest phishing expeditions: TCF Bank,
e-gold.com, Washington Mutual Bank and PayPal. Just don't do it.
