New Search: The Engineering Staff announced last week the rebuilt Search mechanism. Included in the system is a spell-checker that suggests corrections, so, in their words, no more "orcale databse prbolems". It's also a lot more flexible, allowing you to search date ranges, and open or closed questions.
There are a few tricks to the Advanced search, though. First, you type in your keywords and select whether you want the search to look at the Title, Body or Content of the questions (or you can select Everything), and then you have to Submit the criteria. You do the same when changing the Date Range, and whether you want to look at Open or Closed questions. After you've done all your submitting, you then click the Search button.
Once you've gotten all your results, a box will appear on the left side of your browser window, showing the distribution of the questions in the topic areas; clicking the TA will filter the results for that Topic Area only.
New Moderator: We're pleased to announce the addition of DarthMod to the team of Moderators at Experts Exchange. He's one of the original "Google-crushers" who has made good, and will be a big asset to the site. Welcome aboard!
New Geniuses: Congratulations to the two newest Geniuses (1 million points in a single Topic Area) at Experts Exchange: fritz_the_blank in ASP, and rockiroads in Microsoft Access. Your hard work and dedication to EE is remarkable, and greatly appreciated. |

New twist on an old virus: C|Net's News.com reported last week that new versions of the Lovgate virus, first discovered over the July 4 weekend, use an old trick in a new and destructive way. The virus, in addition to pulling the usual "mail to all email addresses and open a back door to the PC" tricks, it also then looks for all of the PCs connected to a network (a la the MSBlast worm), a vulnerability discovered nearly a year ago. The virus also replaces executable files (with .exe) with versions of itself, rendering the computer virtually useless. We'll say it again: make sure your virus definitions are up-to-date. Take a look at Nata's Corner if you want virus protection at no charge.
Point splits and "points for" questions: The Director of Community Services, WesLennon, has asked that we post the ground rules on "points for" questions. The maximum number of points allowed for any question is 500, so if you want to give someone more points than you originally offered, you can either increase the points in the question, or you can create a "points for" question. But either way you do it, the maximum can't exceed 500. The Moderators will remind you of the policy, and then just delete any question that causes the total points offered to go over the limit.
Newsletter archive: An unofficial (and not even necessarily complete) archive of the Experts Exchange newsletters is located here. We'll try to remember to keep the page updated. If you happen to have one that isn't listed or included, feel free to forward it to the Editor.

Still open: How do you chage Adobe Acrobat Default startup folder? Any Windows user has run into pre-set defaults that are annoying, but not that difficult, to change. This one seems to be a stumper.

bruintje
bruintje is one of EE's old-timers, a veteran who joined Experts Exchange in November, 1998. He started in the IT business a year or so before that, has several Microsoft certificates and is currently studying to become a Certified Market Technician. He's also one of EE's truly good guys. Registration Date: November 30, 1998 Expert Points: 1928387 Certificates: Sage, Microsoft Office; Guru, Microsoft Outlook, Visual Basic; Master, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Applications, VB Controls
turn123
turn123 is EE's Designated Hitter when it comes to topic areas; in addition to being one of our most dependable Cleanup Volunteers, he's never shied away from a request, no matter what the TA is. About himself, he modestly says there isn't much to say, except that he's been "playing around" with computers since he was six. "I found EE while searching for some Perl code and stayed in the Perl area for a long time," he adds, and can't say enough good things about fellow PE jmcg and Moderator AnnieMod.
Registration Date: November 4, 2003 Expert Points: 75570 Certificates: Master, Applications
RomMod
RomMod is one of the best examples of the perfect Expert to become a Moderator, and we're glad to have him as such. He joined Experts Exchange way back in August, 2000, and distinguished himself with his sense of humor and patience; he even found time to answer a few questions -- maybe not thousands, but a few -- before joining the Mod program a year ago. An evangelist for the site, he even got his sister to join. How's that for dedication?

Tip from the Page Editors: Always make sure that you have the last comment in your questions, replying to each and every point that the experts have made in the thread. If you can't test the suggestions at that moment, post letting the Experts know. |

One of the least-known new features at Experts Exchange is our new Link Exchange. Our Link Exchange program is beneficial to both sites in a couple ways:
1. The number of resources available to users on both sites will increase
2. Site relevance is increased within all major search engines when a site provides links to and from quality resources
If you would like to swap links with EE, just fill out the form at the Link Exchange page. |

Images in emails: Friends of mine are always forwarding stuff to me, and I wind up writing back to them telling them I didn't get the pictures. If they're using Outlook Express, like I do, here's what you tell them to do: make sure that the picture is attached and that they have the "Send Pictures with Message" option selected.
Lost images: Ever lost images on you digital camera? Or deleted one off a card before you really wanted to? Take a look at MediaRECOVER software; it gets rave reviews from a number of magazines, and costs about $30. If you have priceless photographs of your children or your vacation stored on a card, this could be the best purchase you ever make.
Anti-virus stuff: We got email from a couple of Members who sent us sites that offer free anti-virus software. One is Avast Antivirus, which, in addition to watching your email, can also monitor your messaging software, like ICQ. The other is AntiVir, which is the personal use version of the company's network-enabled, not-for-free software. Be patient with the free site; they're getting a lot of hits and the page doesn't load all that quickly, but the software, according to our correspondent, is worth the wait.
