What is Feedback? Experts Exchange debuted its new Feedback system late last week, so members can now make comments about how a question was asked, how helpful someone was, and so on. There are only a few guidelines:
- Use common sense. Remember, the person you flame today might be the person who can answer your question tomorrow.
- Don't use Feedback to ask a question or to explain one.
- You're not required to leave Feedback.
- The Membership Guidelines apply. Abuse the system, and you'll lose the privileges.
Two Geniuses: Two more names have been added to the Genius list (1,000,000 points in a single topic area): Zvonko in the Javascript topic area, and arbert in the Microsoft SQL topic area. Contratulations, gentlemen, on a job exceedingly well done.
More credit card spoofing: The two latest financial institutions are US Bank and CitiBank. If you get an email from either, asking to verify any personal information, go to the bank's website and follow the instructions. |

JustUNIX
JustUNIX joined Experts Exchange in July, 2003, and true to his username, has stayed pretty close to the UNIX and Solaris topic areas. He is a system architect and security consultant with about 20 years in the business, and owns his own consulting company. He notes that he doesn't have as much time to participate at EE as he would like, but he's done well enough to get our attention.

yuzh
yuzh is the Page Editor for the Solaris topic area. One of our most active PEs, he says he has been "playing with UNIX since the punch card days", and doesn't like the publicity he deserves for being known by Sun Australia, SunSolve and Sun Inner Circle. We beg to differ; he's one of EE's best. Login Name: yuzh Registration Date: June 21, 2000 Expert Points: 448444 Certificates: Guru, Solaris; Master, UNIX, UNIX Programming
Computer101
Ya gotta love 'im. C101 has been around EE for a while: he joined in late December, 1999, and was well on his way to the upper reaches of the Hall of Fame when he was asked to become a Moderator in April, 2001. He became an Administrator in September, 2002. His dedication to EE is matched only by his propensity for fixing his truck and working on his putting.

Tip from the Page Editors: Ask your question in the right Topic Area, and look for subtopics that might be more appropriate. We see a lot of questions asked in Databases, for example, when they should get asked in MS Access or Crystal Reports. If you're not sure, write to the Page Editor and ask, or look at the All Topics page. |

One of the least-known new features at Experts Exchange is our new Link Exchange. Our Link Exchange program is beneficial to both sites in a couple ways:
1. The number of resources available to users on both sites will increase
2. Site relevance is increased within all major search engines when a site provides links to and from quality resources
If you would like to swap links with EE, just fill out the form at the Link Exchange page. |

I got an email the other day from one of EE's members about my note a couple of weeks go, suggesting a few things about virus protection and keeping your computer safe.
One of the comments was about updating your virus protection. I didn't mean to suggest that you have to go out and buy all new virus protection software, but you do have to make sure that it gets updated regularly. That brought up the member's second point: Symantec calls the list of viruses it protects against "definitions", as does McAfee, but other companies use different terms. Trend Micro calls them "virus patterns", for example, but in any case, once you've bought the software, you can update these files as often as you like, for a nominal fee.
The member also brought up my comment about installing a firewall. My cable modem/router has a built-in firewall that I can configure from my computer; the firewall is built into the hardware. But if you don't want to spend the money for protection via the hardware, you can also get the software kind. There are a number of different companies that have (and sell) them; my correspondent says that he likes the one from Zone Alarm because it's easy to use, and best of all, is free.

For most new members, the most frustrating part of asking a question is when an Expert asks you one back. Remember, they aren't sitting at your computer; the Experts are from all over the world, and while they want to help you, sometimes knowing what operating system you have, or which version of a piece of software you're using, is important information. Make sure you click on the link in the email notification you get, and respond to the Experts -- that will get you your solution a lot quicker. |
